You Have the Voice - Now Here’s What Else You Need to Be a Voice Actor

So, you’ve been told you’ve got a great voice. Maybe you’ve nailed a few impressions or brought a character to life so well that your friends demanded an encore. Awesome. That’s step one. But voice acting is more than just sounding good — it’s a full-on business.

And guess what? Voicelings, the voice acting course and mentorship community created by Tara Strong (yes, the voice behind Timmy Turner, Bubbles, Raven, Twilight Sparkle, and more!), is here to guide you through the rest with a comprehensive course and access to a supportive community.

Let’s break down what it takes to become a self-made voice actor — and how Voicelings helps you go from “Hey, cool voice” to “Booked and busy.”

Your Voice Acting Business is YOUR Business

You don’t need to be a business major to run your voice over career, but you do need to think like a CEO at times. From managing auditions to marketing yourself and even editing your audio files, a voice actor wears a lot of hats (and sometimes wigs — we see you, character cosplay crowd).

It’s important to invest in yourself and your voice over career to be successful. This doesn’t have to cost the same as what it does to go to college, but the right investments — in equipment, training, and your mindset — can go a long way and help you reach your goals faster by attracting the right clients.

With Voicelings, you’re not doing this alone. Tara created this course to be what she wishes existed when she started out — real tools, real community, and real feedback.

The voice acting community is one of the most supportive out there, full of people willing to listen to your demo, check out your website, and even introduce you to the right people. After all, who you know can make all the difference!

Now, here’s a look at your “company org chart” for running your voice over business:

  1. Voiceover Talent - hey, that’s you!
  2. Business Manager - that might also be you, sending emails and invoices
  3. Sound Engineer - yep, still you (more on that below)
  4. The Marketer - you again… unless you bring in help (nothing wrong with that!)

Voice actors can wear many hats all at once, and it can be challenging. But it’s important to master these skills, seek support, and ask for help when needed.

Tara’s Kwik Tip: No one is going to hustle harder for your career than YOU. However, the good news is that you don’t have to do it alone — that’s why I created Voicelings. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Look for a mentor to help you sharpen your skills or a friend or family member to listen when you need it. Or, if you can, hire someone to help you edit your demos, build your website, or post for you. It can be a huge timesaver and help you focus on what you do best — voice over!

Finding Your Voice (and Your Inner Unicorn)

You can’t just wake up one day and decide to be Bubbles. (Okay, Tara can, but that’s because she’s spent years honing the craft.) Your voice is an instrument, and like any pro musician, it takes training, control, and consistency.

Even if you’re just starting, showing up every day is the best thing you can do to work on your voice, your most valuable asset. You may have experimented with voicing characters and finding your favorites. If not, then spending time trying on different characters for size and finding a coach with real voice over experience can be a big help!

Inside Voicelings, you’ll work through:

  • Vocal warm-ups
  • Breath control
  • Pitch and tone management
  • Expressing emotion
  • And how to age your voice — from a moody teenager to a cranky grandma (and everything in between!)

Expect course modules like:

  • Discovering your unique voice
  • How to build character voices from scratch
  • Improvisation techniques
  • Maintaining character consistency across takes

Voicelings helps you nail the basics so you can build a strong foundation and a real business.

Managing Your Voice Over Business

It’s important to know where you want to go in voice acting. What kind of work excites you? Animation? Video games? Audiobooks? Commercials? Tara has done them all — and at Voicelings, she’ll help you explore which path lights you up the most.

Be a sponge. Listen actively and study what others in the industry are doing. Identify what you love — and what makes you think, “Hey, I could do that even better.” But don’t just observe forever. Sometimes the best thing you can do is get started. Play. Try. Repeat. And keep a positive mindset and take breaks.

From there, we help you get strategic:

  • Build a polished demo reel
  • Research agents and how to pitch them (it’s tricky, but SO important)
  • Learn to manage your business from top to bottom

Once you start landing those paid gigs (yay!), you’ll need a system for keeping records and managing your finances. This can be accounting software you manage yourself, or you might want to hire a professional accountant to help file your taxes.

Tara’s Kwik Tip: An agent works for YOU — not the other way around. Know your worth, but also know how to bring your A-game. Voicelings covers what agents look for and how to be ready.

Your Home Studio: From Closet to Casting Ready

Let’s talk gear. You don’t need a $5,000 studio to start booking work. Many voice actors start in a closet with a good mic and some foam. You can grow your setup as you go — what matters most is getting started and creating a demo reel.

That means learning sound engineering.

Today’s voice actors are not only talent — they’re their own sound engineers. Taking courses and learning how to self-record and edit in post-production are keys to success in this industry.

You don’t have to be an expert or have the perfect studio, but it’s essential to master the basics so that recording and delivering files to clients feels like second nature.

Inside Voicelings, you’ll learn:

  • How to build your home studio
  • Equipment recommendations at different budget levels
  • Insider tips from Tara’s years of experience

Plus, Voicelings students get exclusive discounts from partners like Koss, specializing in audio equipment.

Marketing Yourself (Without Cringing)

Putting yourself — and your work — out there can feel scary. But there’s no way around it: if you want to be heard, you have to share your voice with the world.

You might be asking, “Where do I begin?” and “How do I reach the right people?” We cover all of this in Voicelings.

At a minimum, you’ll need:

  • A website with demos and contact info
  • A professional email address
  • Social media accounts (please keep them professional!)
  • An agent to help pitch you

There are SO many ways to approach marketing, and many of these things can be done on your own. Still, it’s never a bad idea to ask for help from a designer, web developer, or community manager (this can be a friend, family member, or a hired professional) to help you get started.

With Voicelings, you’ll learn to:

  • Create a demo and a versatile portfolio
  • Network with industry pros (we’ll get you in the same room (er, Zoom) with Hollywood actors)
  • Build your personal brand (aka what makes YOU memorable)

A Community You Won’t Find Anywhere Else

Voicelings has taught me that VO offers ample opportunities. Tara encourages us to try new voices and stay beautifully weird while having fun.
